Kaileigh Moore—Stillwater, NY Tour de Cure

When Kaileigh Moore was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes the day after her 13th birthday, she decided that nothing could hold her back from living her life and achieving her goals. Now 17-years-old, Kaileigh has helped to raise more than $61,000 for the American Diabetes Association through her involvement in Tour de Cure.

When it comes to life, nothing can slow Kaileigh down. Whether she is skydiving for her birthday, pole vaulting on her high school track & field team or advocating for diabetes research and awareness, Kaileigh is always giving 100%!

For the past 3 years, Kaileigh has channeled that same drive and determination into being one of the most successful teams in the Stillwater, NY Tour de Cure cycling event. "The first time I participated in the Tour de Cure, it exceeded all my expectations," she said. "As soon as I finished the ride, I couldn't wait to do it again next year."

Riding alongside her parents, cousins, friends, classmates and extended family, Kaileigh and her 59 team members have consistently been one of the top Tour de Cure teams every year. While it feels great to raise so much money, it is not the fund raising that keeps Kaileigh and her team coming back year after year. It's the people!

"It's great for me to see so many friendly faces, and to meet other people like me who are living normal lives with diabetes," said Kaileigh. "It gives me more courage to fight through the hard days that diabetes can bring by knowing that there are so many other people out there who support me."

Now a senior in high school, Kaileigh dedicates her time to many worthy causes. She has served as a Youth Ambassador for the Tour de Cure as well as on a Youth Advisory Group addressing chronic illnesses in youth for the New York State Department of Health. She plans to attend college in the fall and then work towards achieving one of her life-long goals.

"After college, I want to become a doctor. It has been a dream of mine since I was in elementary school," said Kaileigh. "Hopefully, my future will also include the day when diabetes is cured. I so desperately look forward to that day, and I know that with all the hard work of the American Diabetes Association, it will surely come soon."
